Key facts: With the credit crunch worsening, Bush administration had introduced a bailout package to buy subprime assets from banks. US house of representatives had rejecte d the package earlier leading to a fall in stock markets.

3. Europe also suffering worst economic crisis in decades.

Key facts: Banks bailed out in Europe

4. Iceland become the first country to become totally bankrupt.

Key facts: With all major banks in the country going bankrupt. The country became virtually bankrupt.

5.Private news broadcasters’ association—News Broadcasters Association (NBA)—formally launched the News Broadcasting Standards (Disputes Redressal) Authority on Thursday- a self regulating body.

6.Tatas decide to pull out of Singur and finds a new location for making Nano car at Sanand at Gujarat.

7.Communal clashes between Bodos and Muslims claim at least 55 lives in Assam.

8. All global markets see their worst trading weeks in decades.

9. Nobel prize winners announced.
